Kensuke Shimizu's Art:
Kensuke Shimizu is from Japan, but now lives in Finland. He has been making
creative works, in which visual art & writing are as if they were inside
each other and intersecting each other. Major motifs in his art works are
bicycles
(symbol of nature-friendly & ecology), ecology (relationship between human beings & the natural environment), shoes & shoelaces (symbol of communication), words, dreams, thoughts, visual poems, and so on. In addition to paintings, he has made writing works (short stories, poems)
including visual poems. In addition to his solo art activity, around 2005-2008, as a group art with Sibel Kantola and Petri Öhman, they held the outdoor
art exhibitions of Peace Machine (heart-shaped exhibition structure).
Dreams
About depicting dreamlike world & thoughts, the writing work, L’Enfant de la Haute Mer (Récit tiré de L’Enfant de la Haute Mer) by Jules Supervielle, has influenced him a lot. He read the Japanese translation of this story (translation by Hanya Kubota), for the first time probably around the year 1993. This short story changed his views on fiction completely. This short story is like a story in a dream, like seeing some surrealistic dreamlike painting. After reading this story, he has been making creative works, in which visual art & writing are as if they were inside each other and intersecting each other.
Bicycles
Bicycle is one of the most important symbols of his thoughts towards ecology. Bicycle is a nature-friendly ecological vehicle. Also, he likes the shape of bicycles. A bicycle has two round shaped wheels, and intriguing lines. This combination of roundness and lines fascinates him well. In his paintings and his mixed media art works of bicycles (ecology, nature-friendly ecological vehicle), he expresses the relationship between human beings & the natural environment.
Shoes
Shoes & shoelaces are one of the symbols of his thoughts towards communication and relationships. When he lived in London around 1999 and 2000, he liked to walk around
Covent Garden, at late night during weekends. He liked to see the window displays of
the fashion shops there. Mannequins wearing marvellous clothes, beautifully designed shoes, etc. He became interested in shoes probably from this experience and
also perhaps because the shoelace of his shoes often become loose (so he often tightens up it).
Words & Visual Poems
In some of his art works, words are seen or written. From the very beginning,
he has been interested in using words in his art works. When he was a senior
high school student in Japan, he started to enjoy writing words in some
artistic manner. Writing words like making some kind of design. Design made of words. Sometimes he writes words in the style that the viewers can understand
what he wrote. Sometimes he changes the shape of the words, and in this
case only some of the viewers can understand what he wrote. In his art,
he uses English, French, Italian, Japanese, Finnish, and sometimes also
some words of other languages (Spanish, Czech, Hungarian, and so on).
